PEM Matting: The Perfect Solution for Triathlon Transition Areas

At PEM Surface Creations, we are always hard at work developing new applications for our slip-resistant matting. While our flooring currently blankets a wide array of industries including golf courses and aquatic facilities, there are several industries out there that could be benefiting from our slip-resistant flooring. What are we currently thinking about? Three words: triathlon transition mats.

All participants in a triathlon must compete in three main phases: swimming, biking and running. When the triathlete is changing from water to land, they must first go through what is called a triathlon transition area. While in this zone, which is normally a few hundred meters, the tri-athlete must walk or run alongside their bike. Typically, the area of the transition area is covered in either plywood or wet towels, presenting a slippery surface for both the triathlete and triathlon workers.

Also, because the triathlete is coming straight out of the water, their barefeet are normally covered in sand or mud. As the muck is tracked onto the surface of the transition area, two potential hazards are formed: slippage and cuts to the feet. Once event organizers begin to hose down the feet of the triathletes the area can become very slick, leaving the least experienced participants at the greatest risk of injury.

Are you a triathlon organizer? If so, you better keep reading…

In lieu of overly saturated carpet or plywood, we suggest installing some of our PEM high traffic slip-resistant matting. Because our matting is permeable in nature, it allows for water to drain through the surface, reducing the risk of puddles forming. In addition, our textured surface would provide superior comfort to the athletes’ barefeet.

Below you will find a side-by-side comparison of the standard surface and our PEM slip-resistant matting.

As you can see, PEM matting would be a welcome addition to any triathlon transition area. Its superior aesthetics allows our matting to blend into any setting—regardless of race’s theme. Six of the courses to make the list were based right here in St. Louis. In fact, four of the 6 courses have—you guessed it—our slip-resistant matting!

If you happen to live in the St. Louis area or you simply appreciate beautiful greens, here are the four courses where you can find PEM Golf Matting.

Top 3 Tips for keeping your slip-resistant flooring in shape

So you are now the proud owner of PEM slip-resistant matting. Congrats! We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome you to our family. If you properly maintain your matting, it could—depending on the application—last nearly a decade.  If you truly want your matting to stand up against the test of time, we suggest following our 3 trusty tips. What are they, you ask? Let us explain…

#1 Leaf blowing: While our slip-resistant matting is quite sturdy, we do not recommend using a rake to remove leaves or debris from the surface of your matting. Over time the metal teeth will begin to weaken the surface of your matting, increasing the chances of rips and tears. In short, use your best judgment before using a yard tool to clean your matting. #2 Power wash: Wait! Before you go all Tony Montana on your pool deck matting, golf matting, kennel matting, and/or yoga matting we ask that you take a step back and… breathe. We are not suggesting that you turn your power washer on full blast to see if you can change the color of your matting. Our matting should be cleaned using the low pressure setting. Not only is this more than enough pressure to clean your surface, it will not harm your matting.

#3 Right matting, right surface: One of the best ways to ensure that your slip-resistant matting remains in tip top shape is to make sure the matting you purchase is truly suitable for your application. For example: don’t purchase lightweight matting for high traffic areas. Yes, it will suffice in the short term, but it will wear quickly.

Golf Course High Friction Matting

High Friction Matting at Innsbrook Resort

golf course bridge matting

We love any opportunity to see our matting in action, and that’s exactly what we got earlier this month when we visited Innsbrook Resort Golf Course in Innsbrook, Missouri. This 18-hole public course boasts some gorgeous views and stunning lakes. It’s a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

Innsbrook has been a PEM customer for some time now, having used our matting on bridges and cart paths throughout their course. They most recently placed an order for our NEW High Friction Matting, which was unveiled at the 2012 Golf Industry Show in Las Vegas.

PEM High Friction Matting is perfect for the toughest applications. We apply aluminum oxide “grit” material to our already-durable slip-resistant matting to create even more grip and weatherability. This winning combination was the perfect solution for Innsbrook’s slick, high-traffic surfaces.

golf course bridge mattingThis tiered pathway leads to one of the course’s more challenging holes. The wooden railroad ties were often slippery, especially in the mornings when shaded and damp with morning dew. PEM High Friction Matting was installed on the wooden ties to provide a safe surface for the occasional disgruntled golfer storming off the tee.

golf course bridge mattingInnsbrook also installed PEM High Friction Matting on a highly-traveled footbridge crossing over to a green. Golfers found the bridge to be especially slippery when wet. The matting was easily installed using a combination of adhesive and screws.

The matting has received great reviews from both the golfers and the Innsbrook Resort Golf Course management team. We look forward to additional feedback throughout the season!

Jack-o’-Lanterns and Slip-Resistant Matting

Jack-o’-Lanterns and Slip-Resistant Matting

How do you mend a broken Jack-o’-lantern? With a pumpkin patch! Ok, ok…we just couldn’t resist adding in a little Halloween joke!

But as we pulled out our spider web decorations and candy, we noticed a few odd coincidences between our slip-resistant matting and jack-o’-lanterns. Don’t believe us? Well you’ll just have to read on if you dare and decide if we offering a trick or a treat.

Warding off negative outcomes: Jack-o’-lanterns were first carved to ward off evil spirits roving the countryside on All Hallows’ Eve. People believed that the scary carvings would keep spirits from entering their homes or causing “tricks” around their property. PEM on the other hand helps reduce slips around pools, golf courses, yoga studios, horse stalls and marinas – just don’t call us scary!

Great for many areas: The great thing about pumpkins is the many different ways they can be used. You can eat the seeds, make pumpkin pie or just use them as a decoration. PEM’s matting can be used nearly anyway too. It can be used above water or under water, adhered to a surface or used as a temporary runner.

Different sizes: Pumpkins come small enough to fit in your palm and large enough to break the axel on your pickup truck. PEM comes in three different sizes including 2ft x 25ft, 3ft x 25ft and 6ft x 25ft and also comes in lightweight, high traffic and high friction.

Stored for the season: Pumpkins obviously can’t be put in the pantry over winter, but they can be canned. Much of the pumpkin we eat is actually processed and so it can be eaten later in the year. PEM is can be used all year or can be rolled up and easily stored over the winter.

This Halloween, think about your need for slip-resistant matting in areas where slips are likely to happen. Have a safe and happy Halloween!

PEM Helps with a “Slippery Situation”

Tiger Woods has been through a lot over the past year, but no one could have predicted when a fan threw a hot dog at him! While that might sound like something out of a cartoon, it actually happened on the seventh hole of the Cordevalle Country Club during the Frys.com Open, just a few weeks ago.

The reason we say PEM is helping with a “slippery situation” is the fact that our matting has been used around the golf course for years. Like on other golf courses, PEM’s matting helps reduce slips in high traffic areas. So, although we can’t do much to help Tiger with flying food, we can guarantee our matting helped him on bridges, paths and stairs.

One tournament might have seemed like a lot, but our product was also used during another tournament, the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island Resort. The highlight of this tournament was the exciting playoff for the cup.

Being a leader in slip-resistant matting it is still always exciting to be used during such high profile tournaments. As 2011 come to a close, we are excited for what tournament 2012 will hold. Stay tuned for more to come.

PEM Protects High Traffic Areas, Wysiwash Cleans Them

Locker rooms, playground surfaces and hot yoga studios are all perfect environments for dangerous bacteria, like E.Coli and Staph. Thriving in the warm, wet and highly used areas, aquatic managers and park directors have a lot to worry about.

To protect their visitors, many facilities have turned to PEM Surface Creations and Wysiwash for a long term and cost-effective solution.

How does PEM’s matting protect people? PEM’s slip-resistant matting contains an antimicrobial biocide that guards against the growth of mildew, fungi and bacteria. The porous construction allows moisture to flow through or evaporate to eliminate standing water and reduce algae growth.

And cleaning PEM is also easy, with only a sweeping or hose down the matting can be cleaned. But for a more effective measure we recommend the Wysiwash Sanitizer System.

The Wysiwash…

  • Connects right to your hose
  • Cleans, sanitizes and eliminates odors while blasting away dirt with a jet stream of water
  • Hydro-injection system produces a solution of hypochlorous acid up to 120 times more effective than liquid bleach

PEM and Wysiwash can protect visitors in nearly all environments. Watch our latest YouTube video to find out more.

Living Healthy with Hot Yoga

You think someone would have to be crazy to workout in a room that is 105 degrees, but millions of people do it every week. Why you may ask? They claim there are unique health benefits to the workouts, which are known as hot yoga or Bikram Yoga.

A typical hot yoga workout consists of 26 postures that help people live more relaxing and healthy lives. During a session, every posture is designed to exercise a different part of the body. Whether that is the upper body, lower body, internal organs or even joints. The heat in the room also helps keep muscles loose, which lessens the chance of pulls or tears.

And health benefits don’t stop there, depending on the pose, hot yoga is thought to help ailments ranging from headaches and sore thoughts, all the way to hernias and diabetes. It teaches you to manage breathing properly and helps remove toxins that are sweated out due to the heat.

A demanding workout requires persistence and the equipment to get the job done. PEM Surface Creations has proven to be a perfect solution to hot yoga studios, withstanding the constant use and high temperatures.

The flooring is easy to install, maintain and clean between yoga sessions. The flooring contains an antimicrobial biocide protecting against the growth of mildew, fungi and bacteria.

PEM’s textured surface and soft construction provides padding for points of harmful contact and comfort to bare feet. And because slips and falls can be a concern at hot yoga studios, the PEM flooring lessens the chance of injuries during a yoga session.

PEM Surface Creations has already supplied flooring to hot yoga studios all over the world! To find out more about PEM Surface Creations visit our website.

Santa Wants PEM for the Holidays

Every year Santa brings the world’s good boys and girls their favorite gifts on Christmas Eve for just a glass of milk and his favorite chocolate chip cookies.  His trip, which takes him from the North Pole to every country in the world, is long and tiring, and often he encounters harsh weather conditions.

While Santa spends the entire year getting ready for that one special night, he also enjoys a few hobbies to keep himself busy, including golfing with the elves. Because Santa wears his boots golfing, keeping a solid footing can be tricky on bridges, walkways and cart paths. Until, Santa discovered PEM Surface Creations, and its slip-resistant flooring.

After some strenuous testing from the elves, Santa found a new application for PEM flooring…use on roofs. In the dead of winter, even the most regular roofs can be wet, icy and slippery, leading to rough landings by the reindeer, and possibly slips and falls by Santa himself.

So this year, help a guy out and as you put out cookies for Santa or treats for the reindeer, add some PEM slip-resistant flooring to your roof to keep Santa safe.

At PEM Surface Creations, we like everyone else, want to keep Santa safe during the holidays. That is why we have decided to have an end of the year sale to make PEM flooring available in Santa’s honor. From now until the end of the year, order PEM and receive 40 percent off of your order. And maybe Santa will give you something extra next year as a thank you for your gift to him.

An Affordable Option for Struggling Golf Courses

It is no secret that golf courses nationwide have been struggling because of the recession. With fewer members and dwindling fees, golf courses have been forced to make cuts affecting service and course upkeep, further driving down membership. In a recent article by USA Today, the newspaper covers the extent of the challenge facing golf courses, citing their inability to cope with lighter crowds. According to the article in the past year private clubs have lost an estimated 5 to 15 percent of their membership, costing an average of $187,000 to each course.

Since golf courses are caught in a “catch 22” of membership cancellations because lacking maintenance and not enough money to make the changes, PEM Surface Creations offers slip-resistant golf matting as an affordable and quality solution. The matting constructed specifically for the era of spikeless golf shoes, withstands environmental and chemical degradation, extreme temperature and wind uplift, making it highly durable for many years of use.

Besides from its longevity, PEM’s slip-resistant textured surface reduces slippage in high traffic areas, including bridges, steps, walkways and cart paths. The matting provides low maintenance and cleans with only a sweeping or wash down

As membership shrinks, golf courses will need to find a durable and cost effective solution to continue operating during this “correctional phase.” PEM golf matting is used on more than 2,000 golf courses nationwide and has been the choice for many golf courses as the recession continues, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response.
