New bridge matting at The Golf Club at Tennessee.

Recently, the fine folks at The Golf Club of Tennessee contacted us about installing our slip-resistant matting on their bridges and steps. Because these areas tend to see high levels of foot traffic, we suggested that they go with our high friction golf course matting. Not only can this particular application hold up over time, it can greatly reduce the risk of slips and falls.

The club ended up installing 2,500 sq. ft. of 2ft wide PEM High Traffic/High Friction flooring on all of their bridges and steps throughout the entire course. The additional slip-resistant properties of the high friction grit coating have enhanced the overall surface of the bridge, providing peace of mind for both course employees and customers.

Aside from its slip-resistant properties, our golf matting is also easy to install! Simply apply a 1/4″ bead of adhesive in a herringbone “V” shaped pattern every 4-6 inches. This will ensure that your flooring will remain secure during the lifespan of your application.

Do you know the number one type of accident among people visiting a golf course?

Slips, Trips and Falls!

In a presentation given at a PGA conference, a Travelers Insurance study titled, “Safety on the Fairways”, was referenced. In the study, 33% of visitors involved in an accident on a golf course attributed their misfortune to slips, trips and falls. Think the mishaps are reserved for visitors?

Think again!

The number two type of accident for employees was… you guessed it – Slips, Trips and Falls! Seeing a trend here?

Safety on golf courses is just as important for visitors as it is course employees. PEM Golf Course Matting provides a safe surface to cut down on the risk of accidents. The unique looping design and textured surface provide a slip-resistant non-skid surface for golfers and employees alike.  The porous construction allows water to pass through, keeping the surface dry and allowing for moisture to evaporate. This is key for applications on wooden bridges and steps, where algae growth is a concern.

Think your existing surfaces are skid-free?  Have you checked them lately? Many surfaces become slippery over time due to the wear-and-tear of regular use. Even gritty concrete can become worn and slick – especially when wet! Carefully review your existing surfaces under all conditions to determine your greatest risks for slips, trips and falls.

PEM Golf Course Matting is the perfect solution for cart paths, stairs, ramps, bridges and more. No matter the application – PEM will keep you safely grounded.

Viva Las Vegas!

Wow! What a great couple of days we had at the 2012 Golf Industry Show on February 29th and March 1st!  PEM Surface Creations looks forward to this event year after year, and 2012 was no different. We enjoyed two jam-packed days at the Las Vegas Convention Center in sunny Las Vegas, Nevada.

It’s always nice to see a familiar face, and there were plenty in the crowd at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Golf Industry Show gave us a great opportunity to catch up with current distributors and clients – educating them on new additions to the product line, providing 2012 pricing, discussing potential applications for the upcoming golf season, and discussing previous applications.

We love hearing feedback on our clients’ experiences utilizing the PEM products on their golf course applications. PEM High Traffic Matting continues to be well received as the “best product available” to reduce slips and falls on the golf course. Many customers at the event said it’s “the best product out there,” and after having our same matting on their courses for 7-10 years, we think they’d know! What a great compliment to our products’ longevity and performance.

PEM also unveiled the new PEM High Friction matting to rave reviews. The new matting features an aluminum oxide grit which is combined with a urethane binder, creating a high friction surface coating. This new product is designed for the toughest applications, with a focus on safety and durability. The latest releases in golf footwear seem to be trending towards less of a spike, and our new PEM High Friction matting works perfectly to protect against slips and falls, even on slick, wet surfaces.

We love to keep things fresh and new in the exhibit booth. This year, we added the PEM Walk Bridge – a real walking bridge, providing clients an opportunity to get a true feel of walking on PEM. This true-to-life application will certainly become a staple at future golf shows!

PEM also made several great connections to further our international distribution. With talks underway in countries like Australia, Singapore, South Korea and Japan, PEM is on its way to covering the world, one application at a time. We hope to establish relationships in some of these new international distribution areas, joining our existing networks in Mexico and Canada.

PEM Helps with a “Slippery Situation”

Tiger Woods has been through a lot over the past year, but no one could have predicted when a fan threw a hot dog at him! While that might sound like something out of a cartoon, it actually happened on the seventh hole of the Cordevalle Country Club during the Frys.com Open, just a few weeks ago.

The reason we say PEM is helping with a “slippery situation” is the fact that our matting has been used around the golf course for years. Like on other golf courses, PEM’s matting helps reduce slips in high traffic areas. So, although we can’t do much to help Tiger with flying food, we can guarantee our matting helped him on bridges, paths and stairs.

One tournament might have seemed like a lot, but our product was also used during another tournament, the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island Resort. The highlight of this tournament was the exciting playoff for the cup.

Being a leader in slip-resistant matting it is still always exciting to be used during such high profile tournaments. As 2011 come to a close, we are excited for what tournament 2012 will hold. Stay tuned for more to come.

Slip-Resistant Matting is the Next Evolution in Golf

Golf courses were not always the way they are today.  While golfers have always used a club to hit a ball into a hole, the equipment and course layout was much different in the early days of the game. There is controversy as to where golf originated from, but many agree the 18 hole system came from St. Andrew’s Links in Scotland.

Relying on the lay of the land to dictate the course, St. Andrews Links was built with 11 holes running from the clubhouse to the end of the property. And when a golfer sank their put, they would turn around and play the same fairway in reverse, back to the hole at the other end. This unconventional setup made St. Andrews a 22 hole course, and undoubtedly led to few people yelling “fore.” Obviously the people at St. Andrews agreed that this setup didn’t work, because the course consolidated the course to the traditional 18 holes we know today.

In the United States, we have always followed the 18 hole system. But that doesn’t mean we haven’t made our innovations for the game of golf. In response to the spikeless golf shoes, PEM Surface Creations began producing slip-resistant matting to help reduce the slips and falls of golfers on cart paths and bridges. Now we are on more than 2,000 golf courses and have been used for tournaments such as the PGA Championship in Medinah, Ill. and the Ryder Cup in Louisville, Ky.

We know the discovery of PEM is not as significant as the 18 hole system. But it has helped provide a cost effective and valuable answer to challenges posed by spikeless golf shoes. As golf courses continue to struggle because of the economy, PEM’s golf matting is a long term solution with its 10 year warranty and low cost.
