Non-Skid Matting For Hot Yoga Studio

The creator of hot yoga believes that most people only use 50 of their lung capacity and need to stretch their lungs in order to take in additional oxygen. He also claims that hot yoga stretches every muscle, joint, and organ of the body.

While stretching is important, you never want to pull anything because of a slip during a yoga session. Hot Yoga rooms can be upwards of 100 degrees! And sessions last for 90 minutes. That means a lot of sweating and hard work, but also excess moisture on the floor.

PEM entered this market because our matting is slip-resistant, easy to clean and stands up to years of constant use. We have heard great things from our yoga customers, including out latest at Yoga Core and More in O’Fallon, Il.

We shipped over multiple rolls to the one room studio to help reduce slips. So far we have received positive feedback back from the customer, even seeing pictures of people using our matting during their classes. It is very rewarding!

If you use PEM’s matting and want to share pictures with us, please upload them to our Facebook page.

Smart Thinking at Duel in the Pool

Dueling has been a part of American history since the earliest days of our country. In fact, Alexander Hamilton (Secretary of the Treasury) was killed by Vice-President Aaron Burr in a pistol duel. Could you imagine Joe Biden doing that today? I’m guessing that might cost him a few votes. But the truth was dueling was so entrenched in the culture, nearly everyone participated. For example in the early 1800s, dueling killed more Navy sailors than the sea.

Today, dueling is all but forgotten, partly because it is illegal. Instead, we compete in sports and other “smarter” methods against our rivals. A much anticipated duel quickly approaching is Mutual of Omaha’s Duel in the Pool. The U.S. Swimming Team will be facing off with a team of European All Stars to solidify for a year, who has the best swimmers in the world.

And because the best swimmers need the best equipment, PEM will be there to protect against slips and falls and protect the swimmers’ feet. Our matting will be used around the pool in our signature blue color.

PEM’s slip-resistant matting was chosen in part because it contains an antimicrobial biocide that guards against the growth of mildew, fungi and bacteria. The porous construction allows moisture to flow through or evaporate to eliminate standing water and reduce algae growth. And cleaning PEM is also easy, with only a sweeping or hose down, the matting can be cleaned.

So if you are interested in watching the best from the U.S. faceoff with all Europe has to offer, tune at the below times:

The PEM Surface Creations Story

Every company has a story, it shows who they are and where they are going. Some of the world’s most recognizable brands started in the garage like Google or in a completely different industry, Anheuser Busch (It was a soap factory). PEM is no different, we started with an idea and soon it grew into what it is today.

In the earliest days of the company, Bob Amelung the founder, saw great potential in this matting and the protection it offered as a slip-resistant surface. Bob tried the matting out on his own deck and other trial applications, not surprisingly the matting performed very well.

At this time there was also a shift happening on golf courses around the country – the use of soft golf spikes. So, PEM installed its first application at a St. Louis golf course and the feedback was tremendous. From there word spread and we continued to expand to golf courses across the country.

As the company evolved we were able to service many other industries where slips and falls were an issue, like pool facilities, marinas and boats, equestrian barns and most recently hot yoga studios and marathons.

Today, PEM is used at some of the most high profile events including the PGA tour and the London Marathon.  We have been continually improving our matting and providing new solutions like our high friction matting.

Stay tuned for more to come as we enter into our 15th year of operation!

Jack-o’-Lanterns and Slip-Resistant Matting

Jack-o’-Lanterns and Slip-Resistant Matting

How do you mend a broken Jack-o’-lantern? With a pumpkin patch! Ok, ok…we just couldn’t resist adding in a little Halloween joke!

But as we pulled out our spider web decorations and candy, we noticed a few odd coincidences between our slip-resistant matting and jack-o’-lanterns. Don’t believe us? Well you’ll just have to read on if you dare and decide if we offering a trick or a treat.

Warding off negative outcomes: Jack-o’-lanterns were first carved to ward off evil spirits roving the countryside on All Hallows’ Eve. People believed that the scary carvings would keep spirits from entering their homes or causing “tricks” around their property. PEM on the other hand helps reduce slips around pools, golf courses, yoga studios, horse stalls and marinas – just don’t call us scary!

Great for many areas: The great thing about pumpkins is the many different ways they can be used. You can eat the seeds, make pumpkin pie or just use them as a decoration. PEM’s matting can be used nearly anyway too. It can be used above water or under water, adhered to a surface or used as a temporary runner.

Different sizes: Pumpkins come small enough to fit in your palm and large enough to break the axel on your pickup truck. PEM comes in three different sizes including 2ft x 25ft, 3ft x 25ft and 6ft x 25ft and also comes in lightweight, high traffic and high friction.

Stored for the season: Pumpkins obviously can’t be put in the pantry over winter, but they can be canned. Much of the pumpkin we eat is actually processed and so it can be eaten later in the year. PEM is can be used all year or can be rolled up and easily stored over the winter.

This Halloween, think about your need for slip-resistant matting in areas where slips are likely to happen. Have a safe and happy Halloween!

PEM Helps with a “Slippery Situation”

Tiger Woods has been through a lot over the past year, but no one could have predicted when a fan threw a hot dog at him! While that might sound like something out of a cartoon, it actually happened on the seventh hole of the Cordevalle Country Club during the Frys.com Open, just a few weeks ago.

The reason we say PEM is helping with a “slippery situation” is the fact that our matting has been used around the golf course for years. Like on other golf courses, PEM’s matting helps reduce slips in high traffic areas. So, although we can’t do much to help Tiger with flying food, we can guarantee our matting helped him on bridges, paths and stairs.

One tournament might have seemed like a lot, but our product was also used during another tournament, the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island Resort. The highlight of this tournament was the exciting playoff for the cup.

Being a leader in slip-resistant matting it is still always exciting to be used during such high profile tournaments. As 2011 come to a close, we are excited for what tournament 2012 will hold. Stay tuned for more to come.

Accessibility for the Handicapped on Playgrounds

Accessibility for the Handicapped on Playgrounds

Playground accessibility is a major concern for most park superintendents and according to a study by the National Center for Accessibility it can also have an effect on a child’s experience. The study in its first year, found that many surfaces put children with disabilities at risk and that not all surfaces are created equal.

Noting the trend toward hybrid surface likePEM, the NCA found problems with other surfaces. For example poured-in-place rubber did not meet ASTM fall impact regulations and surface tiles did not withstand regular wear and tear well.

Reporting on the study, the PBS affiliate in Bloomington, IN ran a story which featured a playground using PEM! While not mentioning PEM by name, the spokesperson for the NCA did speak specifically about the benefits of PEM – including the shredded rubber sub floor and unmatched fall impact rating.

One thing that many people might find surprising is that the study also showed that hybrid products like PEM are just as cost effective over a 15 year life cycle.

Dock Flooring – Safety after Getting Off the Water

Boating is a fun and exciting, that is why there are laws and common safety practices to keep people safe when they are on the water. But for most boaters, they will be docking their boat at a local marina on their way and out – presenting a new danger.

What boat and marina owners often do not take into account is he risk posed by wood decking and metal walkways at the marina. For example, decking sees nearly every type of weather, from snow and rain, to heat and cold. That degradation over time will continue to wear on the wood, opening up the possibility of injury from splinters and slippery wood.

PEM Surface Creations offers a solution, which has already been implemented by marinas nationwide. PEM’s textured design reduces slips in wet conditions and eliminates standing water with its porous design. Coming in 6 colors including sandstone and blue, PEM is easily cleaned with only a sweeping or spray down with a hose.

For more on PEM marine slip-resistant matting, visit PEMsurface.com. We have an online ordering function, to easily order the matting. And we will be offering 30 percent off until October 31 and 40 percent off for new customers.

Lawn Bowling

One of the benefits of PEM’s matting is that it can be utilized in a number of applications, from golf, marine, aquatic, yoga and equestrian. But sometimes we receive an order that shows just how versatile our slip-resistant matting really is.

We recently filled an order to the Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club in Corona del Mar, California. For those who have not heard of lawn bowling, it has been around for hundreds of years, coming to the United States from countries like England, France and Scotland.

A sport which closely resembles the games of Bocce, combined with bowling. Lawn bowlers roll balls in an effort to roll their different balls closer to another ball, called a Jack. Each different ball has an identifying mark and carries a different scoring value. Whoever’s specific ball is closer to the Jack gets the points for that ball.

Our matting is being used in the throwing sections, otherwise known as the MAT. (great name!) We hope that the lawn bowlers enjoy PEM’s matting for years to come.
Stay tuned for more interesting applications of PEM.

High Friction Matting For Additional Slip-Resistant Properties

There are countless areas of concern for runners during a marathon, including potholes, slip hazards and even cheering fans. But no one could have predicted the end of the 2006 Chicago Marathon when Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya literally slipped across the finish line, hitting his head, giving him a brain contusion.

If you’ve seen the video, it is hard to watch Cheruiyot fall under the ribbon. But what you will notice is that the course is not wet and it appears that he slips on a sponsor’s logo.

Besides from the embarrassment, this was no way for a champion to finish the race. While he did win, Cheruiyot had to be helped off the course in a wheelchair and even needed further medical attention.

The fact is runners are tired and their footing can be less than ideal as they cross the finish line, even for multi-marathon winners.

That is why PEM has developed High Friction Surface Matting for additional slip-resistant properties. Best utilized in wet on sloped areas and fast-paced traffic areas, the matting was recently utilized successfully throughout the course of the 2011 Virgin London Marathon.

Available in both High Traffic Matting (3/8”) and Lightweight Matting (1/4”) thickness, an aluminum oxide “grit” material is combined with a urethane binder, to create a high friction surface coating for added slip resistant properties on PEM’s toughest applications.  The aluminum oxide material is more scuff resistant than a conventional sand finish for added durability.

The urethane binder is specially pigmented to match the color of the matting for a more aesthetically pleasing surface. We have new pricing and samples, to find out more contact us at 1-800-783-2358 or info@pemsurface.com.

PEM Protects High Traffic Areas, Wysiwash Cleans Them

Locker rooms, playground surfaces and hot yoga studios are all perfect environments for dangerous bacteria, like E.Coli and Staph. Thriving in the warm, wet and highly used areas, aquatic managers and park directors have a lot to worry about.

To protect their visitors, many facilities have turned to PEM Surface Creations and Wysiwash for a long term and cost-effective solution.

How does PEM’s matting protect people? PEM’s slip-resistant matting contains an antimicrobial biocide that guards against the growth of mildew, fungi and bacteria. The porous construction allows moisture to flow through or evaporate to eliminate standing water and reduce algae growth.

And cleaning PEM is also easy, with only a sweeping or hose down the matting can be cleaned. But for a more effective measure we recommend the Wysiwash Sanitizer System.

The Wysiwash…

  • Connects right to your hose
  • Cleans, sanitizes and eliminates odors while blasting away dirt with a jet stream of water
  • Hydro-injection system produces a solution of hypochlorous acid up to 120 times more effective than liquid bleach

PEM and Wysiwash can protect visitors in nearly all environments. Watch our latest YouTube video to find out more.
