PEM Golf Course Matting

Do you know the number one type of accident among people visiting a golf course?

Slips, Trips and Falls!

In a presentation given at a PGA conference, a Travelers Insurance study titled, “Safety on the Fairways”, was referenced. In the study, 33% of visitors involved in an accident on a golf course attributed their misfortune to slips, trips and falls. Think the mishaps are reserved for visitors?

Think again!

The number two type of accident for employees was… you guessed it – Slips, Trips and Falls! Seeing a trend here?

Safety on golf courses is just as important for visitors as it is course employees. PEM Golf Course Matting provides a safe surface to cut down on the risk of accidents. The unique looping design and textured surface provide a slip-resistant non-skid surface for golfers and employees alike.  The porous construction allows water to pass through, keeping the surface dry and allowing for moisture to evaporate. This is key for applications on wooden bridges and steps, where algae growth is a concern.

Think your existing surfaces are skid-free?  Have you checked them lately? Many surfaces become slippery over time due to the wear-and-tear of regular use. Even gritty concrete can become worn and slick – especially when wet! Carefully review your existing surfaces under all conditions to determine your greatest risks for slips, trips and falls.

PEM Golf Course Matting is the perfect solution for cart paths, stairs, ramps, bridges and more. No matter the application – PEM will keep you safely grounded.

End of the Year – A PEM Resolution

The ball is dropping in a few days and we will be raising our glass to a new year at PEM! We have had a lot to celebrate in 2011, including new products, new applications and our products being used at many high profile events.

We love to see familiar faces and we have been happy see many past customers returning. The last few years have not been easy for many and offering a superior product at a low price has been near and dear to most. We see this as a sign things are improving within the industry and that customers have recognized our commitment to keeping prices competitive.

This year, we launched our high friction matting in response to a request from a customer.  The response was to this matting has been amazing. In fact, it was even used through the London Marathon!

But, it was not just our new high friction matting getting the attention! Our matting was used at the Duel in the Pool, Frys.com Open, McGladrey Classic, SEC Swimming Championship and NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship.

We do not have a resolution, like lose weight or eat better, but plan to continue improving our design and bringing slip-resistant matting to different industries.

Happy New Year!

The PEM Surface Creations Story

Every company has a story, it shows who they are and where they are going. Some of the world’s most recognizable brands started in the garage like Google or in a completely different industry, Anheuser Busch (It was a soap factory). PEM is no different, we started with an idea and soon it grew into what it is today.

In the earliest days of the company, Bob Amelung the founder, saw great potential in this matting and the protection it offered as a slip-resistant surface. Bob tried the matting out on his own deck and other trial applications, not surprisingly the matting performed very well.

At this time there was also a shift happening on golf courses around the country – the use of soft golf spikes. So, PEM installed its first application at a St. Louis golf course and the feedback was tremendous. From there word spread and we continued to expand to golf courses across the country.

As the company evolved we were able to service many other industries where slips and falls were an issue, like pool facilities, marinas and boats, equestrian barns and most recently hot yoga studios and marathons.

Today, PEM is used at some of the most high profile events including the PGA tour and the London Marathon.  We have been continually improving our matting and providing new solutions like our high friction matting.

Stay tuned for more to come as we enter into our 15th year of operation!

PEM at the Golf Industry Show

You go to Hollywood to meet movie stars and Silicon Valley to meet computer programmers, so it only makes sense to meet golfers, golf superintendents and others in the industry at the 2011 Golf Industry Show in Orlando, Florida.

Besides the beautiful weather, Florida boasts more golf courses than any other state in the country. In fact there are more than 1,250 golf courses, meaning they have more golf courses than miles of beach front. Florida obviously has their priorities in order.

At this year’s Golf Industry Show we didn’t have time to hit the fairways, much less time to lay on the beach, but we did spend our time catching up with clients and distributors and welcoming their great feedback and comments on our matting.

About 16,000 people attend the show every year and it is always a lot of fun. We had the opportunity to share some other great things we have done over the past year, including an installation at the site of this years 2011 US Open in Washington D.C.

To thank the many people who stopped by our booth, we giveaway a few rolls of PEM to show our appreciation. Congratulations to Troy Fink from The Country Club of Virginia in Richmond, VA and Steve Vaughn from The Clubs of Kingwood in Kingwood, TX your roll of PEM will be shipped soon.

It’s always great to meet golf professionals from all over the world, and we can’t wait for next February to come. Below are pictures we snapped when we had down time at our booth, we look to next years show.

PEM Used at Pro Bowl Playground

WELCOME TO ALOHA STADIUM FOR THE 2011 NFL PRO BOWL, ON DEFENSE, STARTING AT SLIP-RESISTANT SAFETY, # 1 PEM SURFACE CREATIONS!!!! (The crowd goes wild) Ok, maybe we went a little overboard with that one, but when you spent time with pro bowlers in Honolulu, Hawaii sometimes you can get ahead of yourself.

At this year’s NFL Pro Bowl, PEM’s flooring was included in a project to build a new playground for the YMCA of Honolulu. The installation happened the week leading up to the Pro Bowl and included stars like Drew Brees, Wes Welker, Matt Light, Jerod Mayo, Jason Witten and Jahri Evans.

With the Pro Bowl returning to Honolulu, it was a great event to benefit children in the area. Our matting should help reduce slips, high impact falls from playground equipment and allow for wheel chair access. Below is a video of some of your favorite NFL stars at work.

Santa Wants PEM for the Holidays

Every year Santa brings the world’s good boys and girls their favorite gifts on Christmas Eve for just a glass of milk and his favorite chocolate chip cookies.  His trip, which takes him from the North Pole to every country in the world, is long and tiring, and often he encounters harsh weather conditions.

While Santa spends the entire year getting ready for that one special night, he also enjoys a few hobbies to keep himself busy, including golfing with the elves. Because Santa wears his boots golfing, keeping a solid footing can be tricky on bridges, walkways and cart paths. Until, Santa discovered PEM Surface Creations, and its slip-resistant flooring.

After some strenuous testing from the elves, Santa found a new application for PEM flooring…use on roofs. In the dead of winter, even the most regular roofs can be wet, icy and slippery, leading to rough landings by the reindeer, and possibly slips and falls by Santa himself.

So this year, help a guy out and as you put out cookies for Santa or treats for the reindeer, add some PEM slip-resistant flooring to your roof to keep Santa safe.

At PEM Surface Creations, we like everyone else, want to keep Santa safe during the holidays. That is why we have decided to have an end of the year sale to make PEM flooring available in Santa’s honor. From now until the end of the year, order PEM and receive 40 percent off of your order. And maybe Santa will give you something extra next year as a thank you for your gift to him.

PEM Shares Its Knowledge in Pool & Spa Marketing

Slip-and-fall accidents are a leading cause of injury at aquatic facilities. Identifying the safety hazards in an article published in Pool & Spa Marketing magazine, PEM Surface Creations’ vice-president Rob Amelung shares information on slip-resistant flooring and its importance.

Safety is a top priority at aquatic facilities, especially in high traffic and wet areas which increases the risk of slip-and-fall accidents. Because of the economic climate, many facilities are facing budget cuts, meaning that slip-resistant surfaces can be a cost-effective solution.

When selecting a slip-resistant surface, there are many factors to consider, including its location, slip-resistant properties, installation process, physical properties, maintenance, safety and comfort.

Slip-resistant properties – To ensure a surface is slip-resistant, a third party evaluation is needed. Slip-resistant characteristics are graded using a coefficient of friction (COF) scalar value. Tests should be performed on wet and dry surfaces using a variety of footwear (e.g. tennis shoes, grooved neolite and bare feet).

Installation process – Installing a slip-resistant surface is critical to its effectiveness. Determining how to relax your flooring and understanding the adhesives will alter the installation time, longevity and effectiveness of the surface.

Physical properties – Because of where slip-resistant flooring is often installed, it is subjected to elements such as chemicals, extreme heat, wind uplift and mold/mildew growth, which will affect the life of the slip-resistant surface.

Maintenance – To maximize the life of slip-resistant flooring regular maintenance along with proper procedures are required. That includes inspecting edges and using acceptable cleaning products and tools.

Safety and comfort – Providing a safety surface for areas with high barefoot traffic, slip-resistant surfaces should be comfortable to people of all ages. It should also protect bare feet from splinters and hot surfaces.

For a more complete explanation of slip-resistant surfaces, read Rob’s article in Pool & Spa Marketing.

PEM’s Training Takes it From Start to Finish

PEM Surface Creations may not understand the hours it takes to train for a big race whether that be,  a marathon, half-marathon 10k, or 5K, but we have worked hard to produce timing mats that comes in first in safety for your race event.  PEM’s finish line/timing mats are beginning to show up at race events nationwide. Because of its slip-resistant properties, it is a perfect solution to providing a safe finish to a tired runner’s race.  Designed with a porous construction, the matting creates a durable and soft textured surface. The design also does not hold or absorb water, allowing it to run through.

Most races offer chip timing for their competitive runners which means wires crossing the start and finish line for the timing mechanisms.  The chip timing system records a runners chip time, that being their actual race time from the time they cross the starting line to the time they cross the finish line.   Runners are outfitted with a D-Tag to place in their shoelaces that trigger the timing system upon crossing the start and finish line.  While this system allows competitive runners a truer race time, it also creates a hazard with wires crossing the start and finish line. That is where PEM’s timing mat performs best. Unlike other matting, PEM provides a flat surface with no bumps for runners to stumble.

After the race event, PEM’s timing matting is easily rolled up for easy transport from race to race. The matting provides low maintenance and cleans with only a sweeping or rinse down and contains an antimicrobial biocide that guards against the growth of mildew, fungi and bacteria during storage.  The durable construction means that the timing matting will last for a long time to come, withstanding large amounts of foot traffic.

Learning from previous incidents at some of the world’s most prestigious race events, there is no question that extra safety precautions need to be made for runners as they cross the finish line. PEM’s timing matting is an easy and affordable option to keeping runners safe.
