High Traffic Matting for Bridges and Steps

Recently, the fine folks at The Golf Club of Tennessee contacted us about installing our slip-resistant matting on their bridges and steps. Because these areas tend to see high levels of foot traffic, we suggested that they go with our high friction golf course matting. Not only can this particular application hold up over time, it can greatly reduce the risk of slips and falls.

The club ended up installing 2,500 sq. ft. of 2ft wide PEM High Traffic/High Friction flooring on all of their bridges and steps throughout the entire course. The additional slip-resistant properties of the high friction grit coating have enhanced the overall surface of the bridge, providing peace of mind for both course employees and customers.

Aside from its slip-resistant properties, our golf matting is also easy to install! Simply apply a 1/4″ bead of adhesive in a herringbone “V” shaped pattern every 4-6 inches. This will ensure that your flooring will remain secure during the lifespan of your application.

PEM on Best Public Golf Courses in St. Louis

Last month, Golf Digest released their list of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses. We were extremely excited to see that our PEM Golf Matting was installed at 28 of the Top 100 listed courses. Guess what? The news just keeps on getting better and better! Golf Matting

Recently, Golf Digest released a list of America’s Top Public Golf Courses. As you might know, the PEM headquarters is located in St. Louis, Missouri. Six of the courses to make the list were based right here in St. Louis. In fact, four of the 6 courses have—you guessed it—our slip-resistant matting!

Top 3 Tips for keeping your slip-resistant flooring in shape

So you are now the proud owner of PEM slip-resistant matting. Congrats! We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome you to our family. If you properly maintain your matting, it could—depending on the application—last nearly a decade.  If you truly want your matting to stand up against the test of time, we suggest following our 3 trusty tips. What are they, you ask? Let us explain…

#1 Leaf blowing: While our slip-resistant matting is quite sturdy, we do not recommend using a rake to remove leaves or debris from the surface of your matting. Over time the metal teeth will begin to weaken the surface of your matting, increasing the chances of rips and tears. In short, use your best judgment before using a yard tool to clean your matting. #2 Power wash: Wait! Before you go all Tony Montana on your pool deck matting, golf matting, kennel matting, and/or yoga matting we ask that you take a step back and… breathe. We are not suggesting that you turn your power washer on full blast to see if you can change the color of your matting. Our matting should be cleaned using the low pressure setting. Not only is this more than enough pressure to clean your surface, it will not harm your matting.

#3 Right matting, right surface: One of the best ways to ensure that your slip-resistant matting remains in tip top shape is to make sure the matting you purchase is truly suitable for your application. For example: don’t purchase lightweight matting for high traffic areas. Yes, it will suffice in the short term, but it will wear quickly.

Golf Application on Tapawingo Practice Green

Rob Amelung, PEM Surface Creations Vice-President, was recently playing a round of golf at Tapawingo National Golf Club in Sunset Hills, Missouri. This course has three championship nines featuring gorgeous greens and inviting fairways.

Like many courses, Tapawingo struggled to maintain grass leading to their practice green. This area created a two-fold problem:

  • The high-traffic area meant grass would be destroyed easily
  • Mulch was not an option because it would create unnecessary mess

PEM Golf Course Matting was the perfect solution! Tapawingo installed the slip-resistant matting on a walkway leading to their practice green.

In a presentation given at a PGA conference, a Travelers Insurance study titled, “Safety on the Fairways”, was referenced. In the study, 33% of visitors involved in an accident on a golf course attributed their misfortune to slips, trips and falls. Think the mishaps are reserved for visitors?

High Friction Matting at Innsbrook Resort

We love any opportunity to see our matting in action, and that’s exactly what we got earlier this month when we visited Innsbrook Resort Golf Course in Innsbrook, Missouri. This 18-hole public course boasts some gorgeous views and stunning lakes. It’s a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

Innsbrook has been a PEM customer for some time now, having used our matting on bridges and cart paths throughout their course. They most recently placed an order for our NEW High Friction Matting, which was unveiled at the 2012 Golf Industry Show in Las Vegas.

PEM High Friction Matting is perfect for the toughest applications. We apply aluminum oxide “grit” material to our already-durable slip-resistant matting to create even more grip and weatherability. This winning combination was the perfect solution for Innsbrook’s slick, high-traffic surfaces.

The wooden railroad ties were often slippery, especially in the mornings when shaded and damp with morning dew. PEM High Friction Matting was installed on the wooden ties to provide a safe surface for the occasional disgruntled golfer storming off the tee.

golf course bridge mattingInnsbrook also installed PEM High Friction Matting on a highly-traveled footbridge crossing over to a green. Golfers found the bridge to be especially slippery when wet. The matting was easily installed using a combination of adhesive and screws.

The matting has received great reviews from both the golfers and the Innsbrook Resort Golf Course management team. We look forward to additional feedback throughout the season!
