Remember when we were kids, playgrounds had wood chips, rocks and sometimes even concrete as the flooring. Looking back, that was a bad idea. Things were unsanitary, unsafe and unfit to protect playing children.
Now that playground safety is regulated by guidelines, those days are all but long gone. With slip-resistant flooring, the risk of serious injury has been reduced from the impact of falls. Taking safety (and environmental friendliness) to new level, PEM has installed their first playground with a poly foam subfloor!
The new flooring is made of large recycled blocks, which allows for easier installation. Previously, most playgrounds were installed with a rubber subfloor below the matting. That method has proved effective, but requires more labor and knowhow to complete the installation.
So far on our first installation, we are happy to report we have received many good comments about the flooring’s feel and protective qualities. As our matting continues to be used at playgrounds throughout the country, we look forward to further innovating playground matting.
Looking at a playground application of PEM, you will not be able to tell the difference between the old subfloor and the new. The only thing you will notice is the seamless application. Below are a few pictures of our first poly foamed subfloor playground. Stay tuned for more to come!
