PEM Playground Matting at Public Fitness Track

Cities across the state of Missouri are focused on building community through health and fitness, thanks in part to the Missouri Foundation for Health. Communities are coming together to achieve their fitness goals, often utilizing public space for their workouts, and PEM Playground Matting provides the perfect surface for these outdoor recreational facilities.

Less than an hour from PEM’s headquarters, the Missouri Baptist Hospital, in Sullivan, Missouri, recently installed PEM Playground Matting at their newly renovated fitness track. Updates to the public facilities were funded through a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health to implement a Healthy & Active Communities program. The goal of the program is to improve overall community health by increasing opportunities for physical activity. In total, twenty-eight Missouri nonprofits have received more than $5 million in grants awarded by the Foundation.

The surface installed at Missouri Baptist Hospital is a combination of our poly-green foam subsurface topped with the durable PEM Playground Matting. The resulting combination is soft, slip-resistant and safe. Thanks to the mat’s flow-through design, residents will have a dry fitness surface, even after heavy rain. No one likes working out in sloshy conditions!

PEM Playground Matting is the perfect solution for outdoor, all-weather environments.  As the residents of Sullivan will attest, the area is home to cold, wet winters and hot, humid summers. PEM Playground Matting offers superior weatherability, even in the toughest conditions. Our matting will not lose its resilient qualities due to extreme ranges in temperature, weather or ultraviolet exposure, making it the ideal solution for outdoor surfaces.

If you’re in the area, or passing through, stop by Missouri Baptist Hospital’s Public Fitness Track to see PEM Playground Matting in action. We’d love to see some shots of you trying it out!

PEM Yoga Flooring in Biggest Loser Studio

As Season 13 of the Biggest Loser pushes forward, the contestants continue to amaze viewers with their astonishing weight loss. While the season of “No Excuses” has been riddled with divided teams and shocking departures, several common goals remain unchanged: losing weight and getting healthy. PEM Surface Creations is proud to be featured on this season and know that our Yoga Flooring is helping the contestants reach their goals – every soft, safe, slip-resistant step of the way.

The trainers have designed a state-of-the-art workout facility for heart-bursting cardio and muscle-aching resistance workouts. These high intensity workouts take their toll on the contestants’ physical and mental being, and the trainers turn to the yoga studio to provide a relaxing, comfortable environment for stretching and low-intensity exercise. PEM’s soft matting has been installed in the yoga studio as the perfect flooring solution for this space.

If you’ve been following along with this season’s antics, you’ll likely have spotted PEM Yoga Flooring in several episodes along the way. It seems to be a favorite of the red team. In Episode 2, aired January 10th, they were seen doing stretching exercises on the soft Yoga Flooring, while in Episode 5, aired January 31st, they utilized the Yoga Flooring as a slip-resistant surface for a cardio workout. If they keep this up, we might just have to cheer for the red team exclusively!

The unique features of PEM Yoga Flooring make it a perfect fit for The Biggest Loser yoga studio. The textured finish reduces slippage and the porous design allows for fast evaporation and a quick dry. Plus, our antimicrobial formula guards against the growth of mildew, fungi, and bacteria – an absolute MUST in a high-use facility like the set of The Biggest Loser.

Keep your eyes peeled as Season 13 of The Biggest Loser continues. We’re sure to see more PEM Yoga Flooring along the way! Visit the PEM Surface Creations Facebook page for photos throughout  the season and tune in Tuesdays at 7:00pm on NBC for the latest episodes.

PEM Unveiling at Golf Trade Show

Viva Las Vegas! Between the bright lights and chiming slot machines, Las Vegas will play home to another kind of event this February, the Golf Industry Show!

At PEM Surface Creations, we have been a regular participant in the event which showcases many of the best innovations to operators of golf facilities and golf course management professionals.

This year we have a new product we are very excited to showcase. Drum roll please….our new high friction matting! You may have heard about this matting in the past, especially around the London Marathon. Now though, we have perfected our golf matting with high friction grit.

You may ask, what is high friction matting? Easy, we add an aluminum oxide “grit” material which is combined with a urethane binder, creating a high friction surface coating on our mating. It is designed for the toughest applications and is scuff resistant for added durability.

The high friction matting comes in both high traffic and lightweight, and comes in all six colors. And even though we are only now showcasing the product to golf pros, we have installed our first application! A golf course in St. Louis came forward about very high traffic sections of the course. High friction matting served as a solution and we had had very positive feedback!

For more on high friction matting, give us a call today! Or if you are at the Golf industry Show stop by our booth #1574!

The Biggest Loser Makes PEM a Big Winner

Season 13 of the Biggest Loser on NBC is kicking off and it seems they have included PEM Surface Creations! No, we are not a contestant, but our matting is being used in the yoga studio at the ranch.

For those of you who do not know about The Biggest Loser, it is a show where contestants are brought to a ranch to lose weight and become healthy. Along the way, contestants are eliminated for not keeping up on their weight loss, until only one contestant remains. That person takes come $250,000 and a brand new lease on life.

This season the contestants are paired up with a family member or friend. The trainers the contestants are work with are specifically the excuses the contestant uses – hence the season title “No Excuses.”

You may be asking, how did PEM making on the set? Well, it turns out one of show’s producers goes to a yoga studio which has a PEM application. She liked surface and ordered it for the set.

We are excited to see our matting on TV! Keep an eye out for the show on Tuesdays at 7:00pm on NBC.

End of the Year – A PEM Resolution

The ball is dropping in a few days and we will be raising our glass to a new year at PEM! We have had a lot to celebrate in 2011, including new products, new applications and our products being used at many high profile events.

We love to see familiar faces and we have been happy see many past customers returning. The last few years have not been easy for many and offering a superior product at a low price has been near and dear to most. We see this as a sign things are improving within the industry and that customers have recognized our commitment to keeping prices competitive.

This year, we launched our high friction matting in response to a request from a customer.  The response was to this matting has been amazing. In fact, it was even used through the London Marathon!

But, it was not just our new high friction matting getting the attention! Our matting was used at the Duel in the Pool, Frys.com Open, McGladrey Classic, SEC Swimming Championship and NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship.

We do not have a resolution, like lose weight or eat better, but plan to continue improving our design and bringing slip-resistant matting to different industries.

Happy New Year!

Non-Skid Matting For Hot Yoga Studio

The creator of hot yoga believes that most people only use 50 of their lung capacity and need to stretch their lungs in order to take in additional oxygen. He also claims that hot yoga stretches every muscle, joint, and organ of the body.

While stretching is important, you never want to pull anything because of a slip during a yoga session. Hot Yoga rooms can be upwards of 100 degrees! And sessions last for 90 minutes. That means a lot of sweating and hard work, but also excess moisture on the floor.

PEM entered this market because our matting is slip-resistant, easy to clean and stands up to years of constant use. We have heard great things from our yoga customers, including out latest at Yoga Core and More in O’Fallon, Il.

We shipped over multiple rolls to the one room studio to help reduce slips. So far we have received positive feedback back from the customer, even seeing pictures of people using our matting during their classes. It is very rewarding!

If you use PEM’s matting and want to share pictures with us, please upload them to our Facebook page.

Smart Thinking at Duel in the Pool

Dueling has been a part of American history since the earliest days of our country. In fact, Alexander Hamilton (Secretary of the Treasury) was killed by Vice-President Aaron Burr in a pistol duel. Could you imagine Joe Biden doing that today? I’m guessing that might cost him a few votes. But the truth was dueling was so entrenched in the culture, nearly everyone participated. For example in the early 1800s, dueling killed more Navy sailors than the sea.

Today, dueling is all but forgotten, partly because it is illegal. Instead, we compete in sports and other “smarter” methods against our rivals. A much anticipated duel quickly approaching is Mutual of Omaha’s Duel in the Pool. The U.S. Swimming Team will be facing off with a team of European All Stars to solidify for a year, who has the best swimmers in the world.

And because the best swimmers need the best equipment, PEM will be there to protect against slips and falls and protect the swimmers’ feet. Our matting will be used around the pool in our signature blue color.

PEM’s slip-resistant matting was chosen in part because it contains an antimicrobial biocide that guards against the growth of mildew, fungi and bacteria. The porous construction allows moisture to flow through or evaporate to eliminate standing water and reduce algae growth. And cleaning PEM is also easy, with only a sweeping or hose down, the matting can be cleaned.

So if you are interested in watching the best from the U.S. faceoff with all Europe has to offer, tune at the below times:

The PEM Surface Creations Story

Every company has a story, it shows who they are and where they are going. Some of the world’s most recognizable brands started in the garage like Google or in a completely different industry, Anheuser Busch (It was a soap factory). PEM is no different, we started with an idea and soon it grew into what it is today.

In the earliest days of the company, Bob Amelung the founder, saw great potential in this matting and the protection it offered as a slip-resistant surface. Bob tried the matting out on his own deck and other trial applications, not surprisingly the matting performed very well.

At this time there was also a shift happening on golf courses around the country – the use of soft golf spikes. So, PEM installed its first application at a St. Louis golf course and the feedback was tremendous. From there word spread and we continued to expand to golf courses across the country.

As the company evolved we were able to service many other industries where slips and falls were an issue, like pool facilities, marinas and boats, equestrian barns and most recently hot yoga studios and marathons.

Today, PEM is used at some of the most high profile events including the PGA tour and the London Marathon.  We have been continually improving our matting and providing new solutions like our high friction matting.

Stay tuned for more to come as we enter into our 15th year of operation!

Jack-o’-Lanterns and Slip-Resistant Matting

Jack-o’-Lanterns and Slip-Resistant Matting

How do you mend a broken Jack-o’-lantern? With a pumpkin patch! Ok, ok…we just couldn’t resist adding in a little Halloween joke!

But as we pulled out our spider web decorations and candy, we noticed a few odd coincidences between our slip-resistant matting and jack-o’-lanterns. Don’t believe us? Well you’ll just have to read on if you dare and decide if we offering a trick or a treat.

Warding off negative outcomes: Jack-o’-lanterns were first carved to ward off evil spirits roving the countryside on All Hallows’ Eve. People believed that the scary carvings would keep spirits from entering their homes or causing “tricks” around their property. PEM on the other hand helps reduce slips around pools, golf courses, yoga studios, horse stalls and marinas – just don’t call us scary!

Great for many areas: The great thing about pumpkins is the many different ways they can be used. You can eat the seeds, make pumpkin pie or just use them as a decoration. PEM’s matting can be used nearly anyway too. It can be used above water or under water, adhered to a surface or used as a temporary runner.

Different sizes: Pumpkins come small enough to fit in your palm and large enough to break the axel on your pickup truck. PEM comes in three different sizes including 2ft x 25ft, 3ft x 25ft and 6ft x 25ft and also comes in lightweight, high traffic and high friction.

Stored for the season: Pumpkins obviously can’t be put in the pantry over winter, but they can be canned. Much of the pumpkin we eat is actually processed and so it can be eaten later in the year. PEM is can be used all year or can be rolled up and easily stored over the winter.

This Halloween, think about your need for slip-resistant matting in areas where slips are likely to happen. Have a safe and happy Halloween!

PEM Helps with a “Slippery Situation”

Tiger Woods has been through a lot over the past year, but no one could have predicted when a fan threw a hot dog at him! While that might sound like something out of a cartoon, it actually happened on the seventh hole of the Cordevalle Country Club during the Frys.com Open, just a few weeks ago.

The reason we say PEM is helping with a “slippery situation” is the fact that our matting has been used around the golf course for years. Like on other golf courses, PEM’s matting helps reduce slips in high traffic areas. So, although we can’t do much to help Tiger with flying food, we can guarantee our matting helped him on bridges, paths and stairs.

One tournament might have seemed like a lot, but our product was also used during another tournament, the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island Resort. The highlight of this tournament was the exciting playoff for the cup.

Being a leader in slip-resistant matting it is still always exciting to be used during such high profile tournaments. As 2011 come to a close, we are excited for what tournament 2012 will hold. Stay tuned for more to come.
